Constraining Morphological Variation and Development: Agreement in L2 Spanish

چکیده
Structure building in language acquisition involves the adding of successive nodes in a hierarchical structure; its application is seen in the realm of syntax for both L1 (e.g. Clahsen, Penke & Parodi, 1993; Vainikka, 1993) and L2 acquisition (e.g. Vainikka & Young-Scholten, 1994, 1996), and to some extent within phonology as well (Brown, 1997). Although researchers in morphological theory argue that hierarchical structure should be built into the organization of morphological features (e.g. Harley & Ritter 2002; Cowper 2005), the application of structure building in the domain of morphology has received minimal attention within L1/L2 acquisition. The purpose of this paper is to explore to what extent feature geometric models of morphology may be applicable to the domain of L2 agreement: do L2 learners acquire structure gradually in the domain of morphology? Within a generative framework, morphological development has been tied to syntactic development (Vainikka & Young-Scholten 1994, 1996). The successful usage of person and number agreement was taken as a diagnostic for the acquisition of phrases such as AgrP (Agreement Phrase), and the successful usage of past tense morphology as a diagnostic for the acquisition of the TP (Tense Phrase). Compare (1), which the authors analyze as an unraised infinitive in a bare-VP tree, with (2), which shows both agreement and raising to a higher syntactic projection.

Convergence effects in Spanish-English bilingual rhythm
This study examines the rhythmic properties of highly proficient Spanish-English bilinguals. Ten Spanish-English bilinguals who live in the United States read aloud sentences in Spanish (their L1) and English (their L2), and ten Spanish and ten English monolingual control speakers read aloud sentences in their respective native languages. We performed an acoustic analysis of vocalic and consona...
متن کاملIndividual Differences and the Role of the L1 in L2 Processing: An ERP Investigation
Our study uses event-related potentials (ERP) to investigate two factors in the second language (L2) processing of agreement: the role of number and gender features in the native language (L1), and the impact of individual differences between learners. Previous ERP studies investigating L2 agreement vary as to whether they find native-like processing (e.g., Rossi et al., 2006; Tokowicz and MacW...

Foreign language learners tend to avoid phonological difficulties and simply transfer sounds whether from their L1 or any pre-existing L2. Phonological awareness (PA) gives students an active role in understanding their own potential in improving pronunciation through several methods. However, such methods are likely to be restricted to only passive learning methods, such as repetition, reading...

This study examines the roles of proficiency and working memory (WM) capacity in second-/foreignlanguage (L2) learners’ processing of agreement morphology. It investigates the processing of grammatical and ungrammatical shortand long-distance number agreement dependencies by native English speakers at two proficiencies in French, and the relationship between their proficiency and WM capacity in...
